It is not necessary to embed a manifold to explain or calculate its
properties. One needn't have a 3rd dimension to explain curvature of a
sphere, just as one doesn't need a 5th dimension to explain the
curvature of our spacetime in GR.

Yes, you're probably right. I had it that way around in my first draft,
then changed it when I started thinking of an infinite journey, but
remaining in a finite volume.
