Actually I first read about it in Moravec's book _Mind Children_ I think,
and then in Greg Egan's SF novel _Permutation City_, but didn't take it
seriously until I read Tegmark's work, which introduced the idea of a
measure over all possible objects. I think he deserves credit for this even
though the actual measure he presented was ill-defined.

BTW I highly recommend _Permutation City_ where the everything hypothesis
is a central theme. I think I enjoyed _Mind Children_ too when I read it
but I don't remember enough details to recommend it now.
