In a message dated 99-06-11 04:19:52 EDT, you write:

<<
It's James. And that's a difficult one: can our present have many pasts? My
feeling is yes, but QM seems to say no, as I understand it. However the
solution may be in realising that there is not neceserily ONE present: there
may be many identical presents, each with slightly different pasts, but
indistinguishable and hence the same ONE. >>

Here is the experimental proof of many pasts:
1) Use a recording instrument to record events
2) After some time has elapsed look at the data on the recording instrument.
If you look carefully enough, you will notice uncertainty in the data. This
uncertainty corresponds to the many worlds you come from.

The same thing could be done with a photon going through a beam splitter and
coming together again through a second beam splitter. If you attempt to infer
what was the past history of the photon you will notice that in fact it went
through both paths. It has several pasts, so do you.

Question remaining is the problem of identity fusing. How is this done?
Identical minds are actually identical consciousness? By how much should a
mind be different to generate a new consciousness? Is consciousness discrete
or is it a continuum such that we share the same continuum?
