Why Numbers?

Just an idea:

I did a search on the list archives and found 694 posts containing the word
"number" and 271 containing the word "numbers". There were 54 that
contained the word "pattern". The ones I looked at did not strongly
reflect the following:

Perhaps we should just demote the concept of number and just use the idea
of pattern. Numbers, strings, and universes would all be just
representations and "pattern" would be the fundamental.
